Structure

Hat Structure: Shaping Up Your Style

Hat structure refers to how the hat maintains its shape. It's often linked to the style and profile:

  • Unstructured: These hats, like camp hats and some 6-panels, have no internal stiffening and will collapse when not worn, offering a relaxed look.
  • Soft Structure: Found in mid-profile 6-panels, this structure provides some shape due to light stiffening, creating a balance between casual and structured styles.
  • Structured: These hats, including mesh-back 6-panels, A-frame 5-panels, and 7-panels, feature built-in stiffening to maintain their shape, offering a more formal or sporty appearance.

Closures

There are 7 common closure types for hats:

  1. Snapback: A popular closure featuring adjustable plastic or metal snaps at the back.
  2. Strap with metal clasp: Similar to the snapback, but with a metal clasp instead of snaps.
  3. Clip Back: Utilizes a clip closure at the back for adjustability.
  4. Strap With Buckle: Employs a fabric or leather strap that adjusts with a buckle.
  5. Strap With Metal Slider: Similar to the strap with buckle, but uses a metal slider for adjustment.

Most hats have a standard profile, but there are variations to consider:

  • High profile: Often seen in 7-panel and A-frame 5-panel styles, these hats offer a taller crown for a more structured look.
  • Mid profile: This is the most popular, found in 5-panel and 6-panel styles, these hats provide a balance between height and structure.
  • Low profile: Ideal for smaller heads and often used in 6-panel or camp hats, these caps sit closer to the head for a streamlined appearance.

Sizing

  • Measurement: Hats are sized based on head circumference, measured with the strap adjusted to 75% closure. This measurement typically ranges from 44cm to 62cm.
  • Finding your size: Use a soft measuring tape or string to measure around your head, just above your eyebrows.
  • Common sizes:
    • Low & Mid Profile: 58 cm is the most common size for these hat styles. They tend to sit lower on the head and offer a relaxed fit.
    • High Profile: 58.7 cm is the most common size for high profile hats, which have a taller crown and offer a more structured look.

Bill Shape

Beyond the curve of the bill, there are two main bill shapes:

  1. Rounded: This classic style, often found on traditional baseball caps, offers a curved silhouette for a casual and familiar look.
  2. Square: This popular and versatile style features a straight, flat bill, adding a modern and contemporary edge to various hat styles.
